Solid Waste Management

The World Bank’s Solid Waste Management Knowledge Silo Breaker is a community of practice created to share knowledge between practitioners of all affiliations. Through document sharing, discussions, and events, it aims to increase the awareness of solid waste issues and innovations across the globe.
The community’s objectives are: share experiences and resources to learn from solid waste management projects across the World Bank Group; further technical knowledge; strengthen projects by including environmental, social, urban, gender, sustainable financing, and climate perspectives and expertise when relevant; and learn about the latest innovations globally.

Within approximately a single generation, Korea transformed itself from an aid-recipient basket-case to a donor country undergoing fast-paced and sustained economic growth. What makes Korea’s experience even more remarkable is that the fruits of Korea’s rapid growth were relatively widely shared.

    The Egyptian cement industry is the world’s 12th largest and a vital economic force supporting the construction and building sector that accounts for nearly five percent of Egypt’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).1 Today the energy-hungry industry is at a cross-roads: due to fuel shortages, the cement sector is being forced to diversify its energy mix. The study concludes that Egypt produces enough solid waste to satisfy the cement sector’s entire thermal needs.
