Solid Waste Management

The World Bank’s Solid Waste Management Knowledge Silo Breaker is a community of practice created to share knowledge between practitioners of all affiliations. Through document sharing, discussions, and events, it aims to increase the awareness of solid waste issues and innovations across the globe.
The community’s objectives are: share experiences and resources to learn from solid waste management projects across the World Bank Group; further technical knowledge; strengthen projects by including environmental, social, urban, gender, sustainable financing, and climate perspectives and expertise when relevant; and learn about the latest innovations globally.

    By 2050, the world is expected to generate 3.40 billion tons of waste annually, increasing drastically from today’s 2.01 billion tons. What a Waste 2.0: A Global Snapshot of Solid Waste Management to 2050 aggregates extensive solid waste data at the national and urban levels. It estimates and projects waste generation to 2030 and 2050.

  • Municipal Solid Waste Management Sector Review : Review of the Extended Producer Responsibility in Bosnia and Herzegovina for Packaging and Packaging Waste and WEEE

    Since 2000 the municipal waste management sector in BiH is under reform driven by the policy framework of the European Union (EU). As a potential candidate country for EU accession Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has initiated harmonization of its legislation with that of the EU. The existing waste management set-up for both waste collection and disposal is inadequate in most municipalities. The recycling industry in FBiH is not well developed mainly due to the limited size of the market.
