Country and Sustainable Cities IAP Overview
Project Proponent: Secretariat of Environment, Ministry of Public Works, Municipality of Asuncion Implementing Agency: UNDP Asuncion is also part of IADB’s “Emerging and Sustainable Cities Initiative” and is looking to use the SC IAP to implement their ESCI Action Plan. Priorities include: (1) creating the enabling framework for a green sustainable city through capacity building, public awareness programs, disaster risk planning, a finance strategy, and a monitoring system for sustainability; (2) enhancing mobility through a traffic management plan, an electric bus-rapid transit system with a public feeder system, the modernization of the diesel-run bus fleet, the introduction of electronic ticketing for the bus, the implementation of bike and other multimodal transportation infrastructure, and the implementation of maintenance and upgrade standards for public transport vehicles; (3) pilot projects on solid waste management and the implementation of waste recovery and recycling activities; and (4) improving management of protected areas and the restoration of key habitats, such as the Bahia de Asuncion.
