Côte d'Ivoire
Côte d’Ivoire participates in the GEF-6 Sustainable Cities Integrated Approach Pilot (SC IAP) through Abidjan, one of West Africa’s largest and most dynamic metropolitan regions. As the country’s economic engine, Abidjan faces growing pressures from rapid urban expansion, informal development, congestion, and deteriorating air quality. Through GEF-6, Côte d’Ivoire advanced integrated mobility planning, climate-responsive land-use strategies, and resilient infrastructure solutions. The program supported the development of a metropolitan mobility plan, strengthened intelligent transport systems, and promoted cleaner fuels and modernized vehicle fleets to address emissions and improve public health. Additional efforts focused on enhanced urban governance, capacity building, and pilot investments that incorporate adaptation measures for flood-prone, low-lying areas. Côte d’Ivoire’s engagement under GEF-6 has provided a strong example of how fast-growing African cities can adopt data-driven, climate-informed approaches to urban transformation, offering valuable lessons to the wider GPSC and GEF networks.
