São Paulo Statement on Urban Sustainability

17 SEPTEMBER 2019

The São Paulo Statement on Urban Sustainability was endorsed by more than 26 mayors and city leaders during the GPSC 3rd Global Meeting in São Paulo, reflecting a shared commitment to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. As cities continue to grow in both influence and complexity, this collective declaration underscores the urgent need to move beyond fragmented approaches and embrace integrated urban solutions that tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, and social inequality together.

Emerging from high-level dialogue and peer exchange, the statement highlights the dual role of cities as both contributors to global environmental pressures and essential drivers of sustainable transformation. It recognizes that while urban areas concentrate emissions, resource use, and vulnerabilities, they also offer unparalleled opportunities to accelerate innovation, strengthen resilience, and improve quality of life for millions of people.

By aligning local action with global agendas such as the Paris Agreement, the statement calls on cities to lead with ambition and collaboration. It promotes practical pathways already being implemented across diverse urban contexts, from low-emission development and biodiversity conservation to nature-based solutions and inclusive planning.

The São Paulo Statement is both a call to action and a platform for leadership. It invites cities worldwide to share knowledge, scale solutions, and demonstrate how integrated urban development can deliver greener, more resilient, and more equitable futures.
