Cities on the Frontline: Advancing Community Resilience

This tenth session of 2021 Cities on the Frontline Speaker Series, jointly organized by Resilient Cities Network and the World Bank, with special guest co-host, The University of Manchester will focus on Advancing Community Resilience.
Community resilience is an untapped opportunity for economic growth and long-term investment security. The private sector, driven in part of corporate social responsibility goals, as well as the vision laid out in the UN SDGs has, in recent years, been placing more emphasis on community investments. Cities can benefit from partnerships with the private sector; however, in order to effectively advance community resilience there must be transparency and mutually beneficial priorities outlined.
In this session we will host, Martha Herrera Gonzalez, Global Social Impact Director at CEMEX, ARISE Co-Chair and member of the Resilient Cities Network Board. She will share the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility, how best to demonstrate leadership for social impact. We will be joined by Dr. Duncan Shaw, Professor of Operations Research and Critical Systems, The University of Manchester, who will discuss the academic framework for understanding how successful community resilience creates better places for local economies and business operations. In addition, Stewart Sarkozy-Banoczy, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Development, Senior Advisor North America, Resilient Cities Network will join the discussion. He will outline the Community Development Finance Institutions (CDFI) model in the U.S. as a national policy and practitioner model for leveraging private sector expertise and financing long-term community resilience.
Cities on the Frontline Speaker Series is a weekly speaker series co-organized by the Global Resilient Cities Network and the World Bank City Resilience Program since March 2020. The purpose of the series is to share knowledge to help cities respond to the pandemic crisis and plan towards recovery with resilience.
