The COVID-19 pandemic, and various restrictions introduced to manage it, have disrupted food supply systems. Most affected have been the many cities which already faced challenges to ensure a steady supply of food products. Putting in place the systems to cope with pandemic response has been an important reminder of the need to refocus attention to urban food challenges. Cities around the world need to build effective food systems to withstand the shocks and stresses of the future. This Cities on the Frontline Speaker Series session, jointly organized by Resilient Cities Network and the World Bank, will focus on “Building Effective Food Systems for Cities”.

Dr. Gayatri Acharya and Dr. Steven Jaffee will present the findings from their new book “RICH Food, Smart City”. The book identifies the contours of an Asian urban food policy agenda and provides practical guidance on how Asia’s urban leaders, and others operating at national level, can set and pursue food system goals more commensurate with their aspirations to build strong, resilient cities, and reliable (R), inclusive (I), competitive (C) and healthy (H) (RICH) food systems.

Dr. Tammara Soma will join the session to present practical lessons and experiences from developing well-functioning equitable food systems including initiatives to reduce food loss and waste in Indonesia.

Cities on the Frontline Speaker Series is a weekly speaker series co-organized by the Global Resilient Cities Network and the World Bank City Resilience Program since March 2020. The purpose of the series is to share knowledge to help cities respond to the pandemic crisis and plan towards recovery with resilience.
