Vijayawada, in Andhra Pradesh, participated in the GEF-6 SCIAP to pilot innovative waste-to-energy solutions within a rapidly urbanizing corridor. As one of India’s busiest transport hubs, the city faces growing challenges from traffic congestion and waste generation. The program introduced a sewage-to-biogas energy project integrated into mixed-use urban neighborhoods, improving environmental performance while creating cleaner and safer living conditions. The pilot demonstrated the potential of renewable energy recovery from municipal waste streams, supporting national strategies for resilient, low-carbon urban development and providing replicable lessons for other Indian cities.
