The Metropolitan Area of Mendoza (AMM), located in the Andean foothills, participates in the GEF-7 UrbanShift program to promote low-carbon growth and integrated metropolitan management. Comprising six municipalities and home to Argentina’s wine capital, Mendoza faces mounting pressures from rapid population growth, sprawl, and land degradation. UrbanShift supports the AMM in strengthening digital and geospatial platforms to guide sustainable urban planning and monitor sustainability indicators. The program also pilots a “sustainable superblock” in central Mendoza, prioritizing non-motorized mobility, circular waste management, and energy-efficient buildings. These initiatives aim to demonstrate the benefits of compact, connected, and low-emission urban development while safeguarding the natural landscapes and productive ecosystems surrounding the city.
