Darkhan participates in the GEF-8 Sustainable Cities Integrated Program (SCIP) through the Global Platform for Sustainable Cities (GPSC), advancing nature-positive and climate-resilient urban development in Mongolia’s northern region. Established as an industrial center, Darkhan has evolved into one of the country’s key secondary cities, facing growing pressures from urban expansion, resource consumption, and climate variability. Through SCIP, the city is strengthening metropolitan integration and long-term planning capacity to guide sustainable growth and infrastructure investment. Efforts focus on integrated land-use planning, low-carbon and energy-efficient infrastructure, and the application of nature-based solutions to restore degraded ecosystems and improve resilience to floods and extreme temperatures. The program also supports circular economy approaches to reduce waste, enhance resource recovery, and promote local green industries. By aligning these interventions with municipal and national planning cycles, Darkhan is building a portfolio of bankable projects that contribute to Mongolia’s broader transition toward inclusive, low-emission, and sustainable urban development.
