Cool Cities Lab is an open-source data platform developed by the World Resources Institute to help cities better understand and respond to urban heat risks. As extreme heat becomes an increasingly urgent challenge, the platform provides city officials with access to globally available, high-resolution data to assess heat exposure at a hyperlocal level. Designed in collaboration with city practitioners, it addresses a critical gap by offering actionable insights to support evidence-based planning and decision-making.

The tool enables users to identify priority areas, model the potential impact of cooling interventions—such as urban trees, cool roofs, and shading—and generate clear visualizations for planning, investment proposals, and stakeholder engagement. By translating complex data into practical insights, Cool Cities Lab supports cities in developing targeted heat action plans, strengthening resilience, and advancing more livable and climate-responsive urban environments.
