The world is falling short of promises made under the Paris climate deal to help the most vulnerable nations deal with the increasingly devastating impacts of climate change. As cities increase in number and size, urban dwellers feel the impacts of these changes most. More ambitious and drastic measures are needed to address these mounting pressures. Governments, at every level, in every nation, must significantly scale climate adaptation measures to avoid major economic damage.

This second session of 2021 Cities on the Frontline Speaker Series, jointly organized by Resilient Cities Network and the World Bank, focused on “SCALING UP CLIMATE RESILIENCE: Following up on the Climate Adaptation Summit, on the Road to Glasgow COP26”. The session showcased the City of Surat’s Chief Resilience Officer, Kamlesh Yagnik who will reflect on the Surat Resilience Strategy, explaining how we can successfully begin scaling resilience from city to state.

We also were joined by Jorge Gastelumendi, Director of Global Policy, Atlantic Council's Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center, discussing the recently launched Race to Resilience campaign, Arnoud Molenaar, Chief Resilience Officer from the City of Rotterdam, presenting the 1000 Cities Adapt Now global program, Marissa Aho, Chief Resilience Officer from the City of Houston, and Stewart Sarkozy-Banoczy, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Development, Resilient Cities Network, also shared about the Resilience 21 initiative launched in the US which aims to help scale up resilient projects under the Biden-Harris Administration.

Cities on the Frontline Speaker Series was a weekly speaker series co-organized by the Global Resilient Cities Network and the World Bank City Resilience Program from March to December 2020. The purpose of the series was to share knowledge to help cities respond to the pandemic crisis and plan towards recovery with resilience. Questions about the Speaker’s Series can be directed to media@resilientcitiesnetwork.org.
