While there have been tremendous advances in green energy and energy delivery systems, people in urban and peri-urban areas still lack safe, reliable, and affordable power. Cities often need incentives to help transition various sectors, including energy, to a more sustainable, resilient approach. This third session of 2021 Cities on the Frontline Speaker Series, jointly organized by Resilient Cities Network and the World Bank, will focus on “Transitioning to a Sustainable Energy Future”.

In this session, the City of Semarang’s Chief Resilience Officer & Development Planning Agency Infrastructure & Environment Research Head, Muhammad Luthfi, and Cape Town’s Director of Sustainable Energy Markets, Leila Mahomed-Weideman will share the challenges, urgency and efforts to transition to more sustainable energy sources in cities. We will also be joined, via a pre-recorded message, by Andrew Stewart, Executive President of Strategy and Development at Wood, who will share a private sector perspective on responding to the demands to transition to a more resilient future.

Cities on the Frontline Speaker Series was a weekly speaker series co-organized by the Global Resilient Cities Network and the World Bank City Resilience Program from March to December 2020. The purpose of the series was to share knowledge to help cities respond to the pandemic crisis and plan towards recovery with resilience. Questions about the Speaker’s Series can be directed to media@resilientcitiesnetwork.org.
