Seychelles Circularity Assessment Protocol (CAP): Plastic Leakage Results and Recommendations

29 JUNE 2019

The study comprised two activities, namely (i) Assessment of coastal waste management infrastructure in light of climate risks and (ii) Assessment of social aspects of plastics and solid waste management. While both assessments help to build capacity within the Government and relevant national stakeholders concerned with waste management, each assessment addresses specific issues:

The assessment of coastal waste infrastructure and climate risks ascertains the condition of coastal waste management infrastructure and defines potential impacts of climate change on the infrastructure. The focus of the study is on the Providence landfill site on the island of Mahé. It also lays out recommendations for strengthening institutional and technical capacity for assessing such risks and mitigation measures for managing the risk.

While governments can institute policy changes and infrastructural improvements, the successful implementation of measures related to littering is directly linked to consumer and social attitudes and behaviour. The assessment of social aspects of plastics and solid waste management supports the strengthening of baseline data on plastic leakage and makes related recommendations to the Government.
