The 8th Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation was organized by ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability on 4-6 May 2017, in Bonn, Germany. The panel Global Platform for Sustainable Cities: An Integrated approach to Resilience, led by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) on May 06, 2017, explored the potential of the Global Platform for Sustainable Cities (GPSC) in catalyzing and scaling up urban sustainability and resilience across the globe. One of the objectives of this event was to look at the potential for GPSC to share and strengthen transferable knowledge as well as to provide the opportunity for cities and partners to engage in dialogue and share information to promote urban resilience. After a brief introduction to the GEF’s Global Platform for Sustainable Cities program, the dialogue focused on what cities need and how such a platform can address those needs. Many are the tools and methodologies that can help cities to become more sustainable and platforms such as GPSC are fundamental to help cities in their path towards a more sustainable future and to be aware of how different actors are operating in the urban space. The Urban Sustainability Framework (USF) was introduced as a guidance document to help cities pursue an integrated approach. Vertical and horizontal integration was another key point highlighted in the session, underlining the important role that communities play to overcome political time horizon which might prevent the continuity of projects between administrations.

The Resource Team contributed to the organization and participated in the session, which was moderated by ICLEI’s Secretary General, Gino van Begin. C40’s Director of Governance and Global Partnerships, Andrea Fernandez participated as a panelist. Bruno Schwambach, Secretary for Sustainable Development and Environment representing the City of Recife, Brazil and Sean O’Donoghue, Manager, Climate Protection Branch, Environmental Planning and Climate Protection Department representing eThekwini Municipality, South Africa showcased the opportunity that the platform offers to their cities.
