Financing and Implementing Sustainable Cities

Program for the Global Platform for Sustainable Cities Event at the Ninth Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF9)

Saturday, 10 February 2018 from 14:00 to 15:00

Room 402, Kuala Lumpur Convention Center, Malaysia

The event Financing and Implementing Sustainable Cities will be joined by senior management of GEF and the World Bank to discuss steps which cities are taking toward achieving urban sustainability both in terms of visions and actionable plans. Opening remarks by GEF’s CEO and Chairperson will set the stage for the discussion.

Starting off the activities, two GPSC program achievements will be featured. The first achievement will be the signing of a Knowledge Partnership agreement between the Municipality of Aarhus, Denmark, and the World Bank’s GPSC. Bringing Aarhus, as Denmark’s second largest city, into the GPSC as a Knowledge Partner is an important milestone for the knowledge sharing platform. The event’s second activity will be the launch of the GPSC’s Urban Sustainability Framework (USF). It was created as a guidance document which lays out a Four-Stage Approach for cities to understand their current sustainability status, define a vision with priorities, determine to finance, and finally monitor and evaluate their project implementation progress. The USF also is intended to help cities understand the dimensions of urban sustainability through a Measuring Framework which includes indicators so that they can track their progress and compare against their peers.

Lastly, a panel consisting of representatives from international organizations, GPSC cities, and the private sector will share their experiences translating sustainability visions into action. Panelists will also share their insights into how cities can utilize the USF to initiate better-integrated planning, leverage financing opportunities, and implement projects to overall improve their urban sustainability.
