Morocco participates in the GEF-7 UrbanShift program, advancing integrated, climate-responsive urban development in one of North Africa’s most ecologically diverse and climate-vulnerable countries. With rapidly growing cities and rich natural landscapes—from coastal ecosystems to the Atlas Mountains—Morocco faces mounting pressures related to land degradation, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, and increasing climate risks. Through UrbanShift, Marrakech and national partners are strengthening urban planning frameworks, promoting nature-based solutions, and developing innovative financing instruments that support low-carbon, resilient growth. The program also enhances national–local coordination and equips cities to integrate biodiversity, sustainable mobility, and ecosystem restoration into long-term urban strategies. Morocco’s engagement in GEF-7 brings valuable lessons to the GPSC network, demonstrating how climate ambition, environmental stewardship, and inclusive planning can shape more sustainable and livable urban futures.
