The Greater Teresina Integrated Development Region (RIDE), which spans municipalities across the states of Piauí and Maranhão, participates in the GEF-7 UrbanShift program to promote inclusive and climate-resilient urban transformation. As one of the hottest and least economically developed regions of Brazil, Teresina faces overlapping challenges of poverty, weak institutional capacity, and rapid urban growth. Through UrbanShift, the RIDE is developing mechanisms for gender-sensitive inter-municipal governance, enhancing coordination across its 15 municipalities. The program also pilots a low-emission city block in central Teresina, promoting sustainable mobility, efficient buildings, and climate-responsive design. These interventions seek to reduce emissions, improve living conditions, and build institutional frameworks that enable equitable, low-carbon urban development across Brazil’s northeastern region.
