Located in Mpumalanga Province, Gert Sibande District Municipality is part of South Africa’s GEF-8 Sustainable Cities Integrated Program (SCIP). Characterized by energy-intensive industries, including coal-fired power generation and petrochemical activities, the district faces significant challenges related to greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss, and increasing climate risks.

Through the project, Gert Sibande aims to strengthen municipal governance and integrate climate and biodiversity considerations into its planning processes. Activities will support emissions modelling, climate and biodiversity risk assessments, sustainable infrastructure planning, and institutional capacity building, contributing to a transition toward low-carbon, nature-positive, and climate-resilient development.
