The Metropolitan Region of Greater Florianópolis, located on Brazil’s southeastern coast, participates in the GEF-7 UrbanShift program to strengthen integrated urban and environmental planning. Comprising nine municipalities and home to over 1.2 million people, Florianópolis is a dynamic center for innovation, technology, and tourism. Rapid growth and topographic constraints, however, have pushed urban development toward vulnerable coastal and low-lying areas within the Atlantic Forest biome. UrbanShift supports the region in developing socio-environmental macro-zoning to guide sustainable land use and piloting a low-emission neighborhood in Capoeiras. Additional investments focus on community-based conservation and biodiversity monitoring in the Pirajubaé Marine Extractive Reserve and Carijós Ecological Station. These initiatives aim to balance urban expansion with ecosystem protection, positioning Florianópolis as a model for sustainable coastal urbanism in Latin America.
