Diamniadio, located about 30 kilometers from central Dakar, represents Senegal’s flagship initiative for planned urban expansion. Under the GEF-6 Global Platform for Sustainable Cities (GPSC), the government is developing the Diamniadio Urban Pole as a model for sustainable, low-carbon urbanization designed to relieve pressure on the congested capital. The project promotes clean industrial production, resource efficiency, and emissions reduction through improved hazardous waste management and low-carbon energy technologies. It pilots innovative approaches for reducing dioxin and furan emissions and introduces cleaner production standards for local industries. By integrating efficient land use, renewable energy, and sustainable infrastructure, Diamniadio demonstrates how careful planning can guide Senegal’s transition toward green, resilient, and inclusive cities.
