Senegal participated in the GEF-6 Sustainable Cities Integrated Approach Pilot (SC IAP) through the cities of Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saint-Louis, advancing integrated planning, climate resilience, and sustainable mobility in a rapidly urbanizing national context. As coastal and flood-prone cities facing pressures from population growth, informal development, and climate risks, these urban centers used GEF-6 to strengthen governance frameworks, incorporate climate considerations into land-use planning, and pilot solutions for cleaner transport and improved environmental management. Dakar focused on metropolitan planning and climate-informed decision-making; Diamniadio advanced low-carbon industrial development and cleaner production methods; and Saint-Louis integrated climate-risk assessments into its urban resilience strategies, including protection of vulnerable coastal zones. Senegal’s engagement under GEF-6 provides valuable lessons for the global GPSC network, demonstrating how coordinated, climate-responsive planning can help rapidly growing cities navigate environmental vulnerability while promoting sustainable and inclusive urban development.
