Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, participates in the GEF-7 UrbanShift program implemented by the World Bank in partnership with the China Center for Urban Development (CCUD). With over 20 million residents and a rapidly expanding economy driven by manufacturing, technology, and cultural industries, Chengdu is positioning itself as a pioneer in sustainable urbanization in western China. The city’s “Park City” strategy reimagines Chengdu as a network of interconnected blue-green spaces that enhance biodiversity, reduce emissions, and improve urban livability. Through UrbanShift, Chengdu maps natural assets such as wetlands and river systems, strengthens ecological connectivity with protected areas, and engages the private sector in financing green investments. These efforts align with the city’s long-term plan for decarbonization and its vision of building an innovative, inclusive, and nature-positive metropolitan region.
