Tuxpan, in the state of Jalisco, participates in the GEF-6 Sustainable Cities program as part of Mexico’s effort to develop replicable models for low-carbon urban infrastructure. The city hosts a solid waste management pilot centered on an organic waste biodigester, designed to process up to 60 tons of waste per day while generating approximately 0.5 MW of clean energy. Originally prepared for another city, the project was successfully transferred to Tuxpan following a shift in local priorities, demonstrating the importance of flexibility and adaptability in urban project design. By combining waste treatment, renewable energy generation, and institutional learning, the Tuxpan pilot contributes to a broader framework for circular economy solutions that can be scaled across Mexican cities.
