The 14th Session of Cities on the Frontline delves the compound vulnerabilities of communities exposed to urban heat and COVID-19.  While urban heat is not a new phenomenon, COVID-19 has added on an additional layer of risk to cities and vulnerable people within them.

Anne-Marie Hitipeuw, Chief Resilience Officer of the City of The Hague will share how in her city – where heat causes more deaths each year than any other climate-related event – the COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the urgency to address urban heat. She will present the city’s approach on urban heat, actions that the city takes to stay cool, and international examples that inspired it’s actions. Johanna Lovecchio, Associate Director, Associate Research Scholar at Columbia University’s Center for Resilient Cities and Landscapes will discuss practical methods of understanding and mapping compound risks of heat and COVID-19, alongside lessons learned and examples from their work in cities.
