Sierra Leone participates in the GEF-7 UrbanShift program, advancing integrated urban management, climate resilience, and nature-based solutions across a network of rapidly growing cities. Through the Resilient Urban Sierra Leone Project (RUSLP)—implemented with World Bank support—the country is strengthening planning, service delivery, and disaster risk management in Greater Freetown and secondary cities including Makeni, Kenema, Bo, Koidu New Sembehun, Port Loko, Bonthe, and the Western Area District. These cities face acute climate vulnerabilities such as flooding, landslides, coastal erosion, and deforestation, compounded by infrastructure gaps and informal settlement expansion. UrbanShift supports Sierra Leone in piloting green-grey infrastructure, expanding early warning systems, improving solid waste and stormwater management, and rehabilitating wetlands and upper catchments. This work enhances urban resilience while creating co-benefits like biodiversity restoration and livelihood opportunities. Sierra Leone’s engagement provides valuable lessons to the global GEF and GPSC networks on how data-driven planning, community engagement, and nature-based solutions can strengthen resilience in climate-stressed urban regions.
