The Metropolitan Area of Salta, one of the fastest-growing urban regions in Argentina, participates in the GEF-7 UrbanShift program to integrate biodiversity conservation with urban development. Located near the Yungas Biosphere Reserve—home to nearly half of Argentina’s biodiversity—Salta faces challenges of urban sprawl, limited infrastructure, and vulnerability to climate impacts. UrbanShift supports Salta in creating a system of transit-oriented, low-emission green corridors that promote public transport, cycling, and ecological connectivity. The program also fosters a Salta-Las Yungas partnership to strengthen livelihoods through sustainable use of local biodiversity and indigenous products. Together, these efforts aim to balance urban growth with environmental protection and social inclusion across the metropolitan area.
