City Overview
Shenzhen is a major city in the south of China within Guangdong Province. It is part of the Pearl River Delta region, or one of the most densely urbanized and populous regions in China. Shenzhen is known as one of China’s five largest and wealthiest cities; it was one of China’s fastest growing cities, due to its designation as the original Special Economic Zone in 1980. As of August 2017, Shenzhen has 8 metro lines with 198 stations. The total length of metro lines is 286 kilometers with a daily ridership of about 4 million passengers. As of 2018, construction began for four new
metro lines and an extension of a previous line, to be completed by 2022. As Shenzhen has experience with developing successful TOD, both the China Sustainable Cities Integrated Approach Pilot and GPSC intend to leverage its experiences to help other cities. Together, they will also support studies to update Shenzhen’s low carbon city masterplan, specifically examining zoning and urban design around specific different typologies of metro station and related development, construction, and management mechanisms.
Planning Strategies
The current Shenzhen City Masterplan covers the period 2011 to 2020 and is led by the Shenzhen City Planning and Land Resources Committee. The city’s Urban Rail Plan covers the period of 2012 to 2021 and is also led by the City Planning Bureau.
