Background
The 2025 edition of UNIDO’s flagship Bridge for Cities event will focus on the vital role of technological advances and inclusive innovation in shaping sustainable urban development. By 2050, over two-thirds of the global population will live in urban areas, requiring bold transformations in how cities grow, function, and serve their people. Technological and social innovations are key to making this expansion both inclusive and sustainable.
Cities face growing pressures from climate change, emissions reduction, and rapid digitalization, alongside persistent challenges such as housing, inequality, and infrastructure gaps. Yet cities also hold great potential as engines of innovation and industrial transformation. Embracing technologies like Artificial Intelligence, e-mobility, and renewable energy can help reimagine urban systems to meet future needs.
Equitable access to innovation is essential. Social innovation ensures human well-being stays central to urban change. By prioritizing people—improving services, empowering communities, and promoting inclusive growth—cities become more resilient, livable, and fair. Technological and social innovation must work together to create cities that thrive economically and socially.
2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the Bridge for Cities initiative. To commemorate this milestone, the Bridge for Cities 2025 event will be co-hosted by UNIDO and the City of Xi’an, China, and held in conjunction with the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) World Council. For the first time, the flagship event will take place outside UNIDO Headquarters in Vienna, Austria. Partnering with the City of Xi’an for this special edition will not only celebrate a decade of impactful urban innovation but also amplify the global reach and influence of the initiative.
The event will bring together policymakers, private sector leaders, civil society, academia, and development partners to foster dialogue and partnerships. It will highlight scalable solutions and success stories from cities along the Belt and Road and beyond, emphasizing innovation’s role in urban transformation.
A key theme is the evolving relationship between industry and cities. While industries drive growth and employment, they also pose environmental challenges. Inclusive industrial development and climate-smart innovation can help cities balance economic progress with sustainability, improving quality of life.
Overall, the 2025 edition will showcase how cities can harness both technological and social innovation to build resilient, inclusive, and sustainable urban futures, focusing on practical solutions and collaborative models adaptable across diverse contexts.
