"Resilient pathways for sustainable urban development in Africa”

Saturday, 8 December 2018, 11:00 – 12:30
African Development Bank (AfDB) Pavilion, Katowice, Poland

Currently the world is experiencing high rates of urbanization, although this is expected to decrease progressively over the next 50 years on all continents, except Africa. On the African continent the urbanization phenomenon will instead continue to accelerate. Africa’s 1.1 billion population is projected to double over the next 30 years, and more than 80% of the increase will occur in cities. This means by 2050, more than 1.3 billion Africans will call a city home, which thus implies that Africa’s future is urban. It is therefore essential to have the proper mechanisms in place to prevent drastic repercussions from occurring to already vulnerable populations impacted by lack of access to safe drinking water, healthy and hygienic living conditions and climate hazards.

The event “Resilient pathways for sustainable urban development in Africa” will help explore possible avenues for collaboration between various development and private sector partners to mainstream resilience in urban development on the continent. With an estimated thirteen (13) African cities that will surpass New York City in population over the next 80 years, it is critical for the continent to identify and implement sustainable models of urban growth. This will require strong political will and sound integrated planning to set a developmental path that is environmentally friendly, sustainable and resilient to various shocks and stresses while ensuring the highest possible quality of life for current and future citizens.

The technical panel session will be followed by an open and interactive Questions and Answers session which will provide an opportunity for the audience to react to the content presented.

It is with pleasure that the AfDB and the World Bank's Global Platform for Sustainable Cities (GPSC) welcomes you to join the event.
